Gap-electrode discharge forms the core working principle for this neutral grounding protection. If over-voltage builds up at the transformer neutral point and goes beyond gap flashover threshold value, the gap will break down and discharge. The resulting arc connects the transformer neutral to ground. In this way, the locally ungrounded grid shifts into an effectively-earthed state. It safeguards transformer neutral-point insulation under fault conditions, and keeps other live grid equipment away from damage.
Fitted into the gap discharge circuit, a current transformer captures real-time discharge-current magnitude. Relay protection units read this signal and can trip the transformer off the grid when conditions demand. This neutral grounding protection set adopts 8 mm-radius hemispherical rods.
